NCWRC estimates a peak conception date for every county from 1,776 reproductive samples biologists collected through May 2025, roadkills and late-season does among them. Averaged by zone, conception peaks October 31 in the Southeastern zone, November 8 in the Northeastern, November 15 in the Central, November 25 in the Northwestern and December 5 in the Western. The 2024 map came within two days of each.
The cards above follow those zones, but counties vary, from Hyde's October 4 peak, the earliest, to Macon's December 19. NCWRC says some does breed well after the peak, and that the peak in an area changes little from year to year because shortening days drive it, not weather or the moon.

The 2026 to 2027 seasons follow the rut map's five zones:
Gun season opens ahead of every zone's average peak, two to three weeks ahead on the Coastal Plain and a day to a week ahead elsewhere. Early counties can beat it: Hyde peaks October 4 and Granville November 4, both in blackpowder season.

Hunters reported just under 200,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 season, up about 6 percent from the year before and the most in NCWRC's 50-season harvest table. Just under 104,000 were antlered bucks.
Guns other than blackpowder took about three of every four. Bows and crossbows took about 27,000, more than blackpowder. Only about 7,300 came off game lands.

NCWRC manages more than 2 million acres of public and private game lands open to public hunting, from national forest and Army Corps of Engineers land to the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge. Seasons match the private land around a game land unless its own rules say otherwise.
Check the schedule first. Three-day game lands are open only Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and a few holidays, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving included. Others run four, six or seven days a week, and some are permit only.
