WDFW has published no measured breeding dates. Its District 1 biologists put the northeast whitetail rut in mid-November, and statewide it calls November the peak rut period for whitetail. West of the Cascades, district biologists tie the blacktail rut to the November 19 to 22 late buck hunt in Cowlitz, Lewis and Wahkiakum counties, and to the last week of October and first week of November on the coast.
Heads-up: WDFW manages whitetail in six zones, from the Selkirks and the Palouse to the Okanogan Highlands, but the northeast is where its biologists date the rut. West of the Cascades you're hunting Columbian blacktail, and the windows below note which deer is which by region.

Peak: mid-November
Whitetail. WDFW's District 1 biologists put the rut here in mid-November.

Whitetail and mule deer. WDFW gives no separate date here.
Oct 25 to Nov 22
Peak: late October to late November, our estimate
Columbian blacktail. Coastal bucks move most in late October and early November; inland, the rut overlaps the November 19 to 22 late buck hunt.
Regional estimates, and your area can vary. Where these dates come from is below.
2026 season: archery opens early September. Source: Washington season dates (WDFW). Seasons and zones change, so confirm with the agency before you hunt.
We found no WDFW breeding study for Washington deer, and its 2010 whitetail plan still listed rut timing as something to study. Its 2026 hunting prospects for Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties put the whitetail rut in mid-November, and its deer page says Washington deer breed in November and December.
The northeast and Palouse windows bracket that mid-November call, but the exact card dates are our estimate, and WDFW gives no separate Palouse or Blue Mountains date. For blacktail, biologists in Cowlitz, Lewis and Wahkiakum counties tie the rut to the November 19 to 22 late buck hunt, while biologists in Pacific and Grays Harbor counties say bucks seem most vulnerable in the last week of October and first week of November. The westside window runs from late October through that late buck hunt to take both in.

Unless you draw one of 8,500 multi-season tags, your deer tag holds you to one weapon's seasons:
In the northeast, the late modern season lands on WDFW's mid-November rut. The Palouse and Blue Mountains have no general late modern whitetail season, so November there means late archery, late muzzleloader in GMUs 130 to 142, or a quality-buck permit. In WDFW's Southwest Region, about a third of the yearly buck harvest comes in the four-day late buck hunt.

WDFW counts just over 23,000 deer taken statewide in the 2025 season with archery, muzzleloader and modern firearm tags, about 21,400 of them antlered, down about 13 percent from 2024. Multi-season tag holders took close to 2,400 more in the general seasons.
The northeast fell harder: about 2,200 deer in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties, all antlered, down 41 percent. Biologists blame disease outbreaks, the latest in 2025, and the first season under the baiting ban.

WDFW manages more than 1 million acres, and the Department of Natural Resources another 3 million acres of state trust land. DNR land takes a Discover Pass; WDFW land takes a Discover Pass or the Vehicle Access Pass that comes with many hunting licenses.
Most Washington hunting is on private ground. WDFW's Private Lands Access Program opens 1.5 million acres of it free, and Hunt by Written Permission is its most used option. In the northeast, 37 percent of District 1 is public land, mostly national forest. Westside timber owners increasingly charge for access.
