Most of South Carolina breeds between October 15 and November 15. SCDNR's peak breeding map puts the inland Lowcountry, the Midlands and the Piedmont in that one band, a narrow strip of the southern coast earlier, October 1 to November 1, and the mountains along the North Carolina line latest, November 15 to December 15.

SCDNR's peak breeding map puts nearly the whole state, from the inland Lowcountry through the Midlands to the Piedmont, between October 15 and November 15. A narrow strip of the southern coast, roughly the Savannah River to just past Charleston, peaks earlier, October 1 to November 1, and the mountains along the North Carolina line peak latest, November 15 to December 15. The cards above follow that map.
SCDNR's statewide conception chart, built from historic data, puts the average conception date at October 30, with 83 percent of does bred between October 6 and November 16. Neither the chart nor the map says which years or how many deer it rests on.

South Carolina's 2026 to 2027 private-land seasons run by game zone, from Zone 1 in the mountains and Zone 2 in the Piedmont to Zones 3 and 4 in the Midlands and coastal plain:
Each rut window falls inside private-land gun season in its own part of the state; in the Piedmont and the mountains, gun season opens October 11, four days before the main band. SCDNR says the early openers may carry a cost, since pressure built up before the rut can suppress daytime movement during it.

SCDNR's latest harvest report, for the 2024 season, puts the statewide kill at about 191,000 deer, just under 91,000 of them antlered bucks. That was down 4 percent from 2023 and inside the 175,000 to 200,000 range it has mostly held since 2015. October and November, when most does are bred, produce an outsized share of it.
The 2024 season was the first with mandatory reporting through SC Game Check, and the totals are adjusted for hunters who did not report. About 5,100 came off WMAs.

SCDNR's Wildlife Management Area program covers about 1.1 million acres of state land, national forest and private land that SCDNR leases. The U.S. Forest Service supplies the biggest share, about 637,000 acres.
The biggest units are the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley and Charleston counties (about 260,000 acres), the Central and Western Piedmont Hunt Units, and the Mountain Hunt Unit in Greenville, Oconee and Pickens counties. Hunting them takes a WMA permit, and seasons are set area by area.
