NH Fish and Game says it runs the firearm season during the peak of the rut, right after an 11-day muzzleloader season, which puts the 2026 peak somewhere in the November 11 to December 6 gun season. It publishes no breeding dates and no split by region, so the windows below are our estimate.

Where do the New Hampshire rut dates come from?

NH Fish and Game's 2026 hunting digest says the state runs its firearm season during the peak of the rut, right after an 11-day muzzleloader season. In 2026 that puts the peak somewhere in the November 11 to December 6 gun season (November 29 in WMU A).

The digest gives no breeding dates and no split between the North Country and the south. The windows above, centered on mid-November at the front of the gun season, are our estimate, and so is the stagger between them.

How do the 2026 seasons in New Hampshire line up with the rut?

New Hampshire sets deer seasons by Wildlife Management Unit (WMU), but the main 2026 dates hold across most of the state:

With the gun season set on the peak of the rut, every window above runs from late muzzleloader season into the first 8 to 10 days of firearm season, and archery is open throughout. Baiting closes November 18 in WMUs A through L, and Sunday hunting is legal.

How many deer do New Hampshire hunters take?

New Hampshire hunters took just under 14,400 deer in 2025, the highest total since statewide record keeping began in 1922. The department puts the herd at over 100,000 deer statewide.

Where is the public ground in New Hampshire?

All land in New Hampshire, private included, is open to hunting unless posted, and 80 percent of the state's forest is privately owned.

The biggest public block is the 751,000-acre White Mountain National Forest, open to hunting throughout. State parks add about 75,000 acres and state forests almost 96,000. NH Fish and Game owns about 53,000 acres in nearly 100 tracts, mostly Wildlife Management Areas, and an easement opens more than 146,000 acres of the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters. Permanent stands are illegal on state-owned and state-managed land.
