IFW's newest rut data comes from Rut Watch, a fall survey of breeding behavior it began in 2023. Its 556 reports from 2023 and 2024 came from every wildlife management district, 40 of them deer breeding, and from them IFW puts peak conceptions around the third to fourth week of November.
IFW's 1997 deer assessment, citing its 1980 to 1989 reproduction study, put the peak in the third week of November, when most adult does are bred. Yearlings followed in late November and doe fawns, if they bred at all, in mid to late December or early January. It saw no difference by region, so the window above is one statewide card, November 15 to 28, our plain reading of IFW's third to fourth week.

The November 15 to 28 peak falls inside the firearms season, which brings in 80 to 85 percent of Maine's harvest most years and also allows bows and crossbows. Regular archery closes October 30, before the peak, and muzzleloader starts November 30, after it.

Maine hunters took about 55,900 deer in 2025, by IFW's harvest map, up from about 42,300 in 2024. The map gives no buck count. In 2024 hunters registered just under 24,400 antlered bucks, which IFW called the highest buck harvest on record, and over 2023 and 2024 the most bucks per square mile came from districts 24, 22, 21, 23 and 29.

IFW counts more than 17 million acres open to hunters, mostly private. Landowners open more than 10 million acres, and unposted land is legal to hunt under Maine's implied permission rule, though IFW says always ask.
For public ground, IFW's wildlife management areas cover more than 120,000 acres, nearly all open to hunting, and public reserved lands add about half a million acres. On those areas, a stand or blind left more than a day needs a permit.
