West Virginia's DNR calls November the peak breeding season and points archers to a late October pre-rut. It publishes no breeding study. The best measured data comes from one high-density herd in the central Appalachians of West Virginia, studied 1999 to 2002, where the median conception date was November 16. The windows below are our estimate around it.

We found no breeding-date study from the DNR itself. The best measured data is a 2005 Wildlife Society Bulletin study by Campbell and others, who examined the reproductive tracts of 44 does from a high-density central Appalachian herd between 1999 and 2002. Both the median and the most common conception date were November 16, and conception ran from November 4 to December 25.
The DNR's own word is broader: it calls November the peak breeding season and points archers to a late October pre-rut. All three windows above sit inside November, and the November 16 date falls in the central mountains window. It comes from one herd, so the small gaps between the cards are our estimate.

The buck gun season waits until the Monday before Thanksgiving, which the DNR notes gives bowhunters the late October pre-rut and the November rut. The 2026 to 2027 dates:
Only bow and crossbow seasons are open for deer from October 26 to November 22, covering the November 16 peak. With conception running to December 25, some breeding can still happen once the gun season opens.

Hunters took about 92,500 deer in the 2025 to 2026 seasons, 17 percent fewer than the year before. The DNR blamed a big hard mast crop, which spread deer out, and a hemorrhagic disease outbreak in the western counties.
Just over 55,000 of those deer were antlered. The buck gun season took just under 34,000 bucks, and archers took about 29,700 deer, 59 percent of them with a crossbow.

The DNR's Wildlife Resources Section manages about 1.4 million acres, 8 percent of the state, for public wildlife recreation. Hunters can pick from 96 state-owned or leased wildlife management areas covering more than 493,000 acres, or from the state's two national forests.
For an older buck, try the seven older-age deer management areas: Beech Fork Lake, Bluestone Lake, Burnsville Lake, Little Kanawha River and McClintic WMAs, and Coopers Rock and Calvin Price state forests.

A date on a calendar can't tell you which spot to sit. RackIQ weighs the rut phase for your part of West Virginia against the wind, your way in, the pressure already on the ground and what you've seen there, then says hunt it or save it. The Scored Call™ is checked afterward, and every hunt you log makes the next call sharper.

The DNR calls November the peak breeding season. The one measured herd, in the central Appalachians, had a median conception date of November 16, with breeding from November 4 to December 25.
No one has measured the difference. The DNR publishes no regional dates and the only breeding study covers one central mountain herd, so the small gaps between the windows on this page are our estimate.
Bow and crossbow. From October 26 to November 22 they are the only deer seasons open, and the buck firearms season opens November 23, the Monday before Thanksgiving.
