The DEC says New York's deer breeding season runs from October into January, with peak activity in mid-November, and it publishes no split by region. The windows below are our estimate around that statewide peak, and the sections after them carry the 2026 seasons, harvest, public land and rules.

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) says the deer breeding season runs from October into January, with peak activity in mid-November. Its 2012 to 2016 deer plan cites measured data from New York study areas: more than 85 percent of conceptions fell inside 28 days in each area, and most does were bred on their first heat. The plan gives no dates and names no areas.
The windows above sit between November 5 and 20 and center on mid-month, in line with DEC's statewide peak. The regional split and exact days are not DEC's; it has published no regional breeding dates.

A line from the Salmon River on Lake Ontario through Rome to Whitehall on Lake Champlain splits the Northern Zone from the Southern Zone. The 2026 to 2027 dates:
In the Southern Zone the mid-November peak falls in bow season, and gun season opens November 21, just after it. In the Northern Zone the gun season is open through the whole peak. Bows and crossbows are legal in the gun seasons too.

Hunters took about 227,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 seasons, up 2 percent from 2024. Just under 121,000 were antlered bucks. The Southern Zone produced about 196,000 and the Northern Zone about 31,000.
For the first time in modern history, New York hunters took as many bucks 3.5 years or older as yearlings, about 28 percent each. Crossbows took 55 percent of the archery harvest.

DEC manages nearly 5 million acres. The Forest Preserve takes in 2.7 million acres in the Adirondack Park and about 290,000 in the Catskill Park, and hunting is allowed in both. Outside those parks are more than 800,000 acres of State Forests, and there are more than 210,000 acres of Wildlife Management Areas.
Still, 85 percent of New York is private, and over 90 percent of hunters hunt private land. On WMAs and State Forests you cannot leave a trail camera, and a stand must carry your name and address and come out after the season.

A date on a calendar can't tell you which spot to sit. RackIQ weighs the rut phase for your part of New York against the wind, your way in, the pressure already on the ground and what you've seen there, then says hunt it or save it. The Scored Call™ is checked afterward, and every hunt you log makes the next call sharper.

In mid-November, according to the DEC, which says the breeding season runs from October into January. It gives no peak date, so the windows on this page, November 5 to 20, are our estimate around that peak.
The DEC has not published regional breeding dates. Its deer plan says more than 85 percent of conceptions fell inside 28 days in each of its study areas, but it names no areas and gives no dates, so the small stagger between the windows here is ours.
In the Southern Zone, bow season runs October 1 to November 20 and the regular firearms season opens November 21. In the Northern Zone, the regular season runs October 24 to December 6 and covers the whole mid-November peak.
