Idaho Fish and Game says the state's whitetail generally breed in mid to late November, with fawns born late May to early June, and that the deer rut lasts four to six weeks. It gives no peak day and no split by region, so the exact dates on the cards below are our estimate inside that span.
Nov 10 to 24
Peak: mid to late November
Conifer forest where IDFG says whitetail outnumber mule deer.
Nov 12 to 26
Peak: mid to late November
Mostly conifer forest, with good whitetail habitat in the north and west of these units, per IDFG.
Nov 10 to 24
Peak: mid to late November
IDFG says its northern farm units offer among the best chances at a mature buck in the state.

Idaho Fish and Game has not published a fetal or conception-date study for the state's deer that we could find. Its 2020 to 2025 white-tailed deer management plan says Idaho whitetail generally breed in mid to late November, with fawns born late May to early June. A department news release puts the deer rut in November and says it lasts four to six weeks.
The windows above sit in that mid to late November span. IDFG gives no peak day and no split between the Panhandle, the Clearwater and the farm country, so the exact dates on each card are our estimate, not the department's. The plan does back the hunting side: in its northern whitetail units it calls for long general seasons with late rut hunting.

Idaho sets deer seasons unit by unit, and residents choose either a regular deer tag (mule deer or whitetail) or a white-tailed deer tag. On the 2026 whitetail tag, the main general seasons in the north are:
The any-weapon seasons that run to December 1 cover all of the mid to late November breeding IDFG describes, and in Units 4, 7 and 9 a muzzleloader carries you through the same stretch. Units 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 19A close November 20, partway through, and muzzleloader hunts in 14, 16 and 18 open the next day. In the north, archery-only seasons fall before and after the rut, except a Farragut WMA bow hunt in Unit 2 from November 1 to December 1. A crossbow of at least 150 pounds is legal in any-weapon seasons.

Idaho hunters took about 19,700 whitetail in 2025, about 13,300 of them antlered. That is down from about 20,900 in 2024 but in line with the 10-year average. Add about 24,600 mule deer, about 21,500 of them antlered, and the 2025 total comes to about 44,000 deer, about 35,000 of them antlered.
IDFG blames part of the whitetail dip on EHD. By October 27, 2025, biologists had reports of roughly 1,100 whitetail deaths in the Clearwater Region and nearly 400 in the Panhandle, most of the Clearwater's from Units 8 and 8A. Five-point whitetail are still holding at over 20 percent, which IDFG reads as a sign mature bucks remain a good share of the herd.

Nearly two-thirds of Idaho is public land, and IDFG says most of it is open to hunting. The department runs 31 wildlife management areas covering about 370,000 acres. Its access programs open more than 3 million acres, including about 2.3 million acres of state endowment land and Access Yes!, which leases access on or across private land, typically about 350,000 acres a year.
The Large Tracts Program, handled by the Panhandle and Clearwater offices, opens nearly 900,000 acres of private timberland through agreements with Rayonier and the North Idaho Timber Group, with seasons that follow public land rules.

The calendar says when the rut runs in Idaho. Whether your next sit is worth your best spot comes down to the ground you hunt and what you've seen on it, and that is the call RackIQ makes: The Scored Call™, checked afterward. The more hunts you log, the sharper it gets.
