Texas has no single rut. TPWD dated conception in 2,436 does on 16 study areas and found peak breeding running from September 30 on the upper Gulf Coast to December 24 in western South Texas. Even the Hill Country splits three ways, from November 7 in the east to December 5 in the west.

TPWD biologists examined 2,436 does on 16 study areas over three years, dating each conception by fetus length, and reported the results in 1995. Peak breeding ran from September 30 on the north end of the Gulf Coast to December 24 in western South Texas, the latest rut in the state.
Each window above runs from the earliest to the latest TPWD peak in that area. The Hill Country splits three ways: November 7 in the east, November 24 in the middle and December 5 in the west. The study is about 30 years old. In it, TPWD found the rut varied very little from year to year in most areas.

The 2026 to 2027 seasons, split into a North Zone and a South Zone where noted:
Only the Gulf Coast peaks before general season: October 31 on its south end, during archery, and September 30 on its north end, before archery opens. Every other TPWD peak, November 7 to December 24, falls in general season. South Texas does were bred as late as February 1, after general season closes in either zone, and ranches in the Managed Lands Deer Program can hunt through February 28.

TPWD survey estimates put the 2025 to 2026 whitetail harvest at about 782,000 deer, about 413,000 bucks and 370,000 does, down from about 426,000 bucks and 411,000 does the season before. About 714,000 people hunted whitetails, with a 63 percent success rate.

TPWD's Public Hunting Program covers over a million acres of its own and leased land. A $48 Annual Public Hunting Permit opens nearly a million of those acres to walk-in deer hunting on more than 180 areas, wildlife management areas among them.
TPWD's 50 wildlife management areas cover about 749,000 acres, and it runs drawn hunts too. Where a public unit lists only an archery deer season, gun hunting for deer is not allowed there.

The calendar says when the rut runs in Texas. Whether your next sit is worth your best spot comes down to the ground you hunt and what you've seen on it, and that is the call RackIQ makes: The Scored Call™, checked afterward. The more hunts you log, the sharper it gets.
