Where do the Montana rut dates come from?

The best measured look at Montana's rut comes from FWP's Salish Mountains study in the northwest, where biologists radio-collared 390 whitetail between 1988 and 1998 and tracked them from the air into 2000. Deer movement peaked in late November, highest for bucks, and FWP tied it to peak rutting behavior, which lined up with fall migration and the last weeks of the hunting season.

The state's Montana Field Guide puts whitetail breeding in mid to late November statewide and late November to early December in western Montana, and mule deer breeding in late November. None of these sources gives a peak day, so the cards above turn their words into dates. FWP says the rut usually starts in early to mid November, and its research found rutting ruled mature buck behavior by early November.

How do the 2026 seasons in Montana line up with the rut?

Montana's 2026 deer seasons run on statewide dates, with a few districts on their own:

Archery only season closes October 18, before FWP says the rut usually gets going, so in most of Montana the rut is hunted in the general season. It covers nearly all of the mid to late November breeding and western Montana's late November peak. The early December tail in the west falls after the November 29 close and before the muzzleloader opens December 12. Bowhunters out in November have to wear orange.

How many deer do Montana hunters take?

FWP estimates hunters took about 77,300 deer in 2025, just under 58,000 of them bucks, down from about 86,100 in 2024. Whitetail made up about 40,600 of the 2025 total, with about 25,500 bucks, and mule deer about 36,700, with about 32,200 bucks.

Rifles accounted for about 73,000 deer and bows for about 3,700, under 5 percent. Forested northwest Montana, FWP's Region 1, produced more whitetail than any other region, about 9,600.

Where is the public ground in Montana?

Montana has over 30 million acres of state and federal land, nearly a third of the state. National forests cover nearly 16 million acres, the BLM manages over 8 million, mostly rangeland, and state school trust land adds 5.5 million acres that take a State Recreational Use License to hunt.

Block Management opens private ground for free: for 2026, about 1,200 landowners enrolled about 6.8 million acres, sometimes with adjacent or isolated public land included. Unlocking Public Lands lets you cross enrolled private land to reach state or federal parcels you could not otherwise get to. FWP's wildlife management areas are free to hunt, but those that serve as big game winter range typically close December 2. Most deer B licenses are now good only on private land.
