Alabama's rut runs from mid-November to mid-February depending on where you hunt, and ADCNR says most of the state peaks in mid to late January. Its biologists mapped peak breeding from deer reproduction data collected at herd health checks from 1995 to 2019, and the restocking that rebuilt the herd is why neighboring counties can be weeks apart. The windows below follow that map.
Jan 9 to 24
Peak: mid to late January
Also Madison, Marshall, Blount, Colbert and Franklin in the north. Dallas County’s measured conception dates average January 25.
Jan 25 to Feb 8
Peak: late January into early February
Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, Clarke, Monroe, Escambia and Conecuh.
Dec 25 to Jan 8
Peak: around New Year
Pickens, Lamar, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Bibb and Jefferson, plus Morgan, Cullman, Etowah and DeKalb.
Nov 24 to Dec 24
Peak: mostly December 9 to 24
Limestone, Lawrence, Winston, Calhoun, Cherokee and Cleburne, with cores as early as November 24.
These windows show peak breeding on ADCNR’s rut map; ADCNR says buck movement peaks about a week to 10 days earlier. Confirm legal season dates, bag limits, and zone rules directly with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources before hunting.
2026 season: archery opens in some zones early October, and later in others. Source: Alabama season dates (Outdoor Alabama / ADCNR).
Alabama's rut dates come from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Its biologists built a statewide rut map from deer reproduction data collected at herd health checks from 1995 to 2019, at 282 sites in 66 counties. The map shows the two-week window when most breeding happens in each part of the state, from November 10 to 23 at the earliest to January 25 to February 8 at the latest. ADCNR says most of Alabama peaks in mid to late January, and that deer restocked from several states still carry the rut timing of the herds they came from.
The map is not a clean slide from north to south: the earliest pockets sit in the north and northeast, and the latest in the far southwest. In Dallas County, conception dates measured at nine sites from 1997 to 2019 averaged January 25. ADCNR adds that buck movement peaks about a week to 10 days before breeding.
The windows above follow ADCNR's map, grouped into four areas. The map's lines cut across county lines, so look up your own ground on it before you plan around a window.

Alabama sets deer seasons by zone. For most of the state, Zones A and B, the 2026 to 2027 dates are:
Zones C, D and E, smaller areas of north and east Alabama, run different dates, and each WMA sets its own. Every window on ADCNR's rut map falls inside archery season, and gun season on private land is open from November 21 through the whole January peak.

Alabama hunters reported about 206,000 deer through Game Check, the state's mandatory harvest reporting system, in the 2024 to 2025 season. Not every deer gets reported, and ADCNR's survey puts the full harvest that season at about 330,000 deer, taken by about 236,000 deer hunters.
ADCNR's Game Check report for the 2025 to 2026 season would not open when we checked, so these are the most recent figures we could confirm.

ADCNR manages more than 750,000 acres of wildlife management areas for Alabama hunters. About 367,000 acres are owned by ADCNR and the Forever Wild Land Trust, about 345,000 acres are federal land managed under agreements with the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, TVA and the Corps of Engineers, and about 38,000 acres are private land under lease.
Eleven Special Opportunity Areas add limited draw hunts, where a permit holder and guests get a dedicated unit of 300 to 400 acres for a 2 to 4 day hunt.

An Alabama rut calendar gives you the regional breeding window. RackIQ adds the conditions that decide the actual hunt: your terrain, wind, access, hunting pressure, weather, rut phase, cameras, and property history.

It depends on the county. ADCNR’s rut map puts Madison, Marshall, Colbert and Franklin at January 9 to 24, Morgan, Cullman and DeKalb at December 25 to January 8, and parts of Limestone, Lawrence and Winston in December, with cores as early as late November.
Most of the Black Belt peaks January 9 to 24, and conception dates measured in Dallas County average January 25. The far southwest, from Mobile and Baldwin up through Clarke and Monroe, runs latest, January 25 to February 8.
Yes, from mid-November to mid-February. ADCNR says deer restocked from several states still carry the rut timing of the herds they came from, which is why neighboring counties can be weeks apart.
