Tennessee Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

TWRA publishes no breeding or conception dates for Tennessee deer, so the windows below are our estimates. The evidence we could find points later in the west and the mountains: a 2024 study in southwest Tennessee counted November 30 to December 13 as peak rut, and the mountains likely breed in early to mid December.

Quick answer: Tennessee’s rut runs from mid-November into December. TWRA publishes no breeding dates; our windows put Middle Tennessee in mid-November and run the west and east into mid-December, where a 2024 southwest Tennessee study and the mountains’ late-June fawning both point. Use the regional window to understand breeding timing, then choose the actual sit based on wind, access, hunting pressure, food, weather, and what deer are doing on your ground.

Rut windows by region

Middle Tennessee

Nov 8 to 20

Peak: mid-November, our estimate

Wilson, Rutherford, Williamson and surrounding counties. We found no published breeding dates for Middle Tennessee.

West Tennessee

Nov 15 to Dec 13

Peak: late November into early December, our estimate

A 2024 study in southwest Tennessee counted November 30 to December 13 as peak rut there.

East Tennessee

Nov 20 to Dec 13

Peak: late November into December, our estimate

The mountains likely run latest: Smokies fawns arrive in late June, which counts back to early to mid December breeding.

These windows are our estimates, since TWRA publishes no breeding dates. Where they come from is below. Confirm legal season dates, bag limits, and unit rules directly with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency before hunting.

Where do the Tennessee rut dates come from?

TWRA's deer page gives gestation, about 199 days, but no breeding dates. The closest published look is a 2024 Journal of Mammalogy study that watched scrapes on camera at the University of Tennessee's Ames Research and Education Center, in the southwest, from September 2021 to January 2022. Citing a University of Tennessee researcher, it puts the breeding peak there in the first one to two weeks of December. Scrape visits peaked in the first half of November.

The cards above are our estimates, not TWRA's, and the West and East cards run into mid December to take in that evidence. The study counts November 30 to December 13 as peak rut. In the mountains, the National Park Service puts fawning in late June, and counting back 199 days lands breeding in early to mid December. We found no published dates for Middle Tennessee.

How do the 2026 seasons in Tennessee line up with the rut?

TWRA's statewide deer seasons for 2026 to 2027:

Every rut card falls in the muzzleloader or gun season. Bows are legal in both, so bowhunters wear orange then. Muzzleloader season covers the whole Middle Tennessee card, and gun season, opening November 21 as usual on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, covers the end of the West card, most of the East card and the study's early December peak in the southwest.

How many deer do Tennessee hunters take?

Tennessee hunters took about 168,000 deer in the 2024 to 2025 season, TWRA's annual report says.

Hunters' deer are also how TWRA tracks CWD, with more than 100,000 sampled since 2018. In 2025 to 2026, estimated prevalence in positive counties ran from under 1 percent in Hardin County to about 29 percent in Fayette.

Where is the public ground in Tennessee?

TWRA manages about 1.6 million acres of public land, including more than 100 wildlife management areas and refuges, from 53 acres to 625,000, plus Public Hunting Areas, which are generally small.

WMA non-quota big game hunts take a $24 permit. WMA stands must carry your TWRA ID number and can't sit unattended over 24 hours without the manager's OK, and baiting is banned on all public land.
