New Jersey's rut peaks about a week later in the south than in the north. Citing studies, the state's Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation put the peak of the mating season in the first three weeks of November in the northern counties and the last three weeks of November in the southern counties, with breeding running well into December in both.
Nov 1 to 21
Peak: first three weeks of November
The state's peak for the northern counties. Breeding can run well into December.
Nov 10 to 30
Peak: last three weeks of November
The state's peak for the southern counties, about a week behind the north. Breeding can run well into December.

In a 2011 joint release, the state's Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation said studies put the peak of the deer mating season in the first three weeks of November in the northern counties and the last three weeks of November in the southern counties, with breeding running well into December in both. The release does not name the studies. Their 2025 release gives the statewide span: peak mating season runs from late October to mid-December.
The windows above follow that split, North Jersey November 1 to 21 and South Jersey November 10 to 30. The state names no single peak day and does not say where north ends and south begins, so if you hunt the middle of the state, plan for both.

New Jersey sets deer seasons by zone, and for 2026 to 2027 it groups the zones into High, Medium and Low regulation sets that share dates. The main seasons:
Permit Bow opens October 31 in every zone, so it covers the whole northern peak and nearly all of the southern one (in Low zones it closes November 29). Youth Firearm Day, November 21, falls inside both peaks, and High zones open antlerless-only muzzleloader and shotgun days on November 23. The Six-day Firearm season comes after both peaks but still inside the late October to mid-December span the state calls peak mating season.

New Jersey hunters took about 38,400 deer in the 2025 to 2026 seasons, 2 percent fewer than the season before. Just under 18,000 of them were antlered, a little under half the harvest and up more than 5 percent, while the antlerless take fell about 8 percent to about 20,600.

New Jersey has more than 750,000 acres of state land open to deer hunters. The digest lists the ground you can hunt without an extra access permit zone by zone, such as Stokes State Forest and Bear Swamp WMA in Zone 1 and Wharton, Bass River and Penn state forests in Zone 24. Not every WMA is open to every kind of hunting or every season, so check a WMA's rules before you go.
State parks and forests are closed to Sunday hunting. Gear there has to carry your CID number, bait is capped at a 5-gallon pail or a 50 pound bag, and temporary stands can go up 30 days before the season and must come down within 14 days after it closes.

The calendar says when the rut runs in New Jersey. Whether your next sit is worth your best spot comes down to the ground you hunt and what you've seen on it, and that is the call RackIQ makes: The Scored Call™, checked afterward. The more hunts you log, the sharper it gets.
